High-traffic urban interchange and river bridge, Fairbanks

The Challenge

Reconstructing the intersection of Airport Way, Steese Expressway, Gaffney Road, and the Richardson Highway — one of Fairbanks’ busiest interchanges — while also replacing the deck of the Chena River Bridge and tying in a new fiber optic signal network, all without shutting down a critical corridor.

What B&B Delivered

Reconstructed the multi-road intersection with roadside hardware, drainage, and ADA improvements (curb ramps and sidewalks)
Replaced the deck of Chena River Bridge #0231 alongside pavement preservation and drainage work
Installed a fiber optic signal interconnect system linking signals along the Steese Expressway from Airport Way to College Road

The Result

A modernized, ADA-compliant interchange

A rebuilt bridge deck over the Chena River

A connected signal network across one of Fairbanks’ highest-traffic corridors
